Methodology
Data is drawn from TxDOT's Crash Records Information System (CRIS) for calendar year 2023. Crashes are filtered to include only those involving commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) as defined in the CRIS data dictionary — vehicles with a GVWR over 10,000 lbs or combination vehicles.
"Fatalities" counts persons killed in CMV-involved crashes, not crash incidents. "Injuries" counts persons injured (all severity levels combined). Some crashes result in multiple fatalities or injuries.
CRIS data covers reported crashes only. Crashes that were not reported to TxDOT — particularly minor property-damage incidents — are not included. Fatality data is generally considered complete; injury data may undercount minor injuries.
